Scanzano Scores 19th Goal of the Season

No. 5 / 6 Lakers Blank Robert Morris, 5-0

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Sophomore Jesse Scanzano scored her team-leading 19th goal of the season and senior Courtney Drennen recorded her seventh career shutout as the No. 5 / 6 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team blanked College Hockey America foe Robert Morris, 5-0, at the RMU Island Sports Center. With the win, the Lakers improve 17-5-0 overall and 6-0-0 in conference play. Robert Morris, on the other hand, falls to 9-15-2 and 4-5-1 in CHA action.

Mercyhurst took control of the game early on with four scores through the first 25 minutes of play. Scanzano netted the eventual game-winner as part of a two-goal first period at the 6:05 mark, getting help from sophomore Melissa Lacroix and senior Valerie Chouinard on the play.

Less than eight minutes later, junior captain Meghan Agosta increased the lead to 2-0 thanks to a pass from freshman Kelley Steadman at 13:11. Freshman Jess Jones was credited with the secondary assist.

The Lakers stretched the run into the second period with two goals less than two minutes apart. Freshman Bailey Bram moved the advantage to 3-0 when she connected off an assist from Agosta at 2:58, while Steadman followed suit with the team's fourth goal at 4:24. Sophomore Cassea Schols and freshman Pamela Zgoda both earned helpers to make the score 4-0.

Lacroix closed out the game with her first of the season at 14:28 of the third period. Bram and senior Hayley McMeekin picked up assists on the goal.

Mercyhurst finished the game with a 50-23 advantage in shots and held the Colonials scoreless through 10 power-play chances. The Lakers were 0-for-5 with the extra-man.

Drennen improved her season record to 4-3-0 with 23 saves, including 12 in the third period.

Mercyhurst will look to take over first place in the CHA next weekend when Wayne State visits the Mercyhurst Ice Center for a two-game series on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31.
