Erie, Pa. - The No. 4 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team extended its winning streak to 11 games and junior captain
Meghan Agosta had a goal and four assists to move into first place on the all-time scoring list, as the Lakers completed the weekend sweep of Vermont with a second straight 8-1 verdict Sunday. The Lakers improved to 14-4-0 while the Catamounts left Erie with a 4-17-1 slate.
The Lakers jumped on Vermont with four first period goals. Freshman
Jess Jones collected her first of two goals, and fourth of the season, just 2:38 into the contest. Sophomore
Vicki Bendus made it 2-0 at 11:51 with her seventh of the year. The lead grew to 4-0 when senior
Valerie Chouinard cashed in a power play chance at 12:36 while Jones registered her second of the period at 19:49.
Vermont had an opportunity early on in the second period to cut into the Lakers' lead when Brittany Nelson was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked from behind on a breakaway opportunity. Nelson tried to make a move to the forehand, but Mercyhurst senior goaltender
Courtney Drennen poke-checked the puck away before the shot could be taken. Just over three minutes later, sophomore
Ashley Cockell made it 5-0 with her fourth goal of the season.
The lead extended to 6-0 early in the third when freshman
Meghan Corbett tallied her first collegiate goal. The Catamounts, however, would get their lone goal of the game at 9:19, as Molly Morrison cashed in on a power play chance.
Mercyhurst capped off the scoring with two goals in the span of 56 seconds late in the third when senior
Hayley McMeekin scored an unassisted goal at 17:21 and Agosta banged home a rebound at 18:17.
Drennen made her fifth start of the season and stopped 11 Vermont shots. She improved to 2-3 on the season. Kristen Olychuk started in goal for Vermont and stopped 22 of 30 Mercyhurst shots. Vermont finished 1-for-9 on the power play, while the Lakers finished 1-of-4.
Agosta's goal and four assists give her 171 career points, one more than Chouinard, who remained tops in the record book with her 38th career power play goal Sunday. Jones' multiple-goal game was the first of her career.
Something will have to give next weekend when the Lakers visit Connecticut Friday and Saturday. The Huskies, who are 14-6-2 on the season, are among those receiving votes this week and have won eight straight.
