Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst used a four-goal second period to break open a tight game and went on from there to defeat the Guelph Gryphons 9-2 in an exhibition game Saturday at the Ice Center.
The Lakers got lamplighters from seven different players including three by junior forward
Meghan Agosta.

Hayley McMeekin and Guelph winger Jessica Zerafa traded power play goals in the first six minutes of a 1-1 first period. Zerafa's came late in a 5-on-3 situation. The Lakers owned a 10-6 advantage in shots.
Agosta scored twice in the middle period and completed her hat trick with a goal nearly eight minutes into the third. Sophomore forward Jessie Scanzano and junior defenseman
Johanna Malmstrom also scored in the second frame as the Lakers opened a 5-1 lead before the Gryphons got a late power play goal by defenseman Carla D'Angelo to trim the deficit to three after forty minutes. Mercyhurst outshot Guelph 11-7 in the second period.
Agosta completed her hat trick at 7:49 of the third and the Lakers exploded for three more markers in a six-minute span to finish the scoring. Senior
Valerie Chouinard (pp) lit the lamp at 9:46 followed by sophomores
Geena Prough and
Vicki Bendus at 11:35 and 15:48 respectively. Mercyhurst had a wide 14-4 shot advantage in the final period and owned a 35-17 margin for the 60 minutes.
Freshman
Hillary Pattenden went all the way in goal for the Lakers and allowed only a pair of power play goals in 17 shots. Cassandra McNichol took the loss for Guelph.
Before the game, the 2007-2008 team received rings for a 6th successive College Hockey America crown.
Mercyhurst will travel to Minnesota next weekend for a pair of exhibition games against Team USA.
