No. 22 Lakers Down Raiders 2-1 in OT

Nicholas Thompson scored the game-winner in overtime Saturday.
Shippensburg, Pa. - The No. 22 Mercyhurst men's soccer team used two late goals to win 2-1 at Shippensburg Saturday. Nicholas Thompson scored the game-winning goal in overtime after Billy Colton netted a goal of his own to send it to overtime.

The Lakers are now 6-1-1, while the Raiders fall to 1-6-2 on the season.

Despite dominating play throughout, Mercyhurst found itself trailing 1-0 with four minutes remaining in regulation. Thompson passed the ball to Sean Spangler, who then found Colton for a shot that eluded Shippensburg keeper Brad Patke at 86:06. The goal tied the score at 1-1, and was Colton's ninth on the season and 25th for his career.

The Lakers asserted themselves again in the overtime session, recording five shot attempts while not allowing a single shot. Tyler Emerick took a corner kick in the 97th minute that Thompson quickly converted into the game-winning marker. Thompson's goal was his third of 2008.

Mercyhurst surrendered the opening goal of the match in the 25th minute of play, as Dave Rostad beat keeper Danny Mudd, off of an assist by Brad Anderson to give Shippensburg a 1-0 lead that they would carry through halftime.

The offensive statistics were heavily in the favor of the Lakers, as they outshot the Raiders 24-6, including 12-2 in shots on goal. Mercyhurst also attempted 13 corner kicks to Shippensburg's three.

The Lakers are back in action Wednesday as part of a PSAC West doubleheader, with both the Mercyhurst men and women traveling to play Lock Haven. The men's match begins at 4:00 p.m., with the women's match being contested at 2:00 p.m.
