No. 9 Lakers Edge Rensselaer, 2-1

Senior Valerie Chouinard scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes to play.
Erie, Pa. – Behind the strength of two power-play goals, the No. 9 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team capped off its second come from behind victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Rensselaer Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

Having to rally for their first win of the season against Boston University, the Lakers (2-1) found themselves in a familiar situation staring down an early deficit.

Rensselaer took full command in the first period, outshooting the Lakers, 10-5, and taking a 1-0 lead off an Allysen Weidner goal less than four minutes into the frame.

However, the Lakers would turn the tables in the second, limiting the visitors to one shot and breaking down the RPI defense with their first power-play score. Senior Hayley McMeekin tied the game at 1-1 with her third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Bailey Bram at the 14:37 mark.

The special teams would continue to excel in the third period, converting on a second power-play chance that sealed the game in the final minutes. Senior Valerie Chouinard netted her 11th career game-winner after knocking in a puck that squirted out of the RPI goaltender's pads with 2:36 left to play. Bram and sophomore Vicki Bendus picked up helpers on the play.

Despite the first period score, freshman Hillary Pattenden shutdown the Engineers with 17 saves en route to her second collegiate victory.

The Lakers finished the game with a 26-18 edge in shots and converted 2-for-6 on the power-play. Rensselaer was 0-for-5 on the extra-man advantage.

Mercyhurst hosts Rensselaer for game two of the series on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
