Boston University Earns Split Against No. 5 Lakers

Boston, Mass. – The No.5 Mercyhurst College women's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit against Boston University Friday night. It was the Terrier's turn Saturday afternoon. BU scored three third period goals to overtake the Lakers, 3-2, at Walter Brown Arena. The teams split the two-game series (Mercyhurst prevailed 4-2 Friday). The Lakers dropped to 1-1 on the season while BU improved to 2-2.

Mercyhurst seemed on its way to a two-game sweep when freshman forward Kelly Steadman scored her first collegiate goal less than a minute into the game and senior winger Hayley McMeekin followed suit with her second goal of the weekend 15 minutes later. Freshman forward Lauren Ragen picked up her first collegiate assist on Steadman's goal while sophomore forward Ashley Cockell helped on McMeekin's lamplighter. Mercyhurst owned a 12-9 advantage in shots in the first twenty minutes.

The Terriers peppered Mercyhurst senior goaltender Courtney Drennen with 23 second period shots, but could not find the back of the net. The Terriers limited Mercyhurst to eight shots on goal in the middle period.

BU stole the momentum early in the third by scoring twice within 50 seconds. Sophomore Jillian Kirchner drew the Terriers within a goal at 2:55 and senior winger Erin Seman knotted the game at 3:45. The game remained tied for nearly 14 minutes before junior Jonnie Bloemers tallied the game-winner at 17:22.

Boston University outshot Mercyhurst 42-28 and finished 0 for 9 on the power play. The Lakers were blanked in five tries. The 43 shots surrendered by the Lakers were the most in regulation since allowing 49 to Harvard in a 5-4 triple overtime setback in the 2005 NCAA East Regional.

Drennen stopped 39 scoring attempts, but suffered her second career loss in 23 decisions (19-2-2). Her only other career loss came in a 7-3 verdict at Providence last January. Senior Allyse Wilcox picked up the win for BU.

Mercyhurst, now 1-1 on the young season, will host Rensselaer for a pair of games next Friday at 7 and Saturday at 2.
