ERIE, Pa.- 10 nations are set to compete in the women's ice hockey tournament at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. A trio of Lakers have received a call to train with their countries ahead of the competition.
Sofia Nuutinen (Finland),
Julia Schalin (Finland), and
Tara Bach (Germany) are all training with their national teams ahead of the Olympics.
Nuutinen and Schalin were both featured on Finland's updated roster for Olympic training. The two forwards amassed 57 points last season. Nuutinen scored 11 goals and tallied 14 assists. Schalin scored 14 goals and added 18 assists.
The Finnish national team is set to compete in the Women's Euro Hockey Tour (WEHT) tournament in Kloten, Switzerland from Aug. 25-31. They will face off against the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Switzerland on HBO Max.
Historically, only the U.S. and Canada have claimed the gold medal since women's hockey was added in the 1998 Nagano Olympics in Japan. Finland, as of April 21, is the third best team in the world according to the International Ice Hockey Federation's rankings.
Meanwhile, freshman goaltender
Tara Bach will be competing with Germany's U18 team at the Four-Nations tournament in Fondo, Italy Aug. 28-30. Bach was one of two netminders selected for this tournament. Germany recently defeated Hungary 2-1 in their final qualification match to secure their first spot in the Olympics since the 2014 Sochi Games.
