Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst welcomed Wagner to town as the squads began their three-game series on Friday. The Seahawks pulled of a 5-4 comeback win over the Lakers to improve to 16-3 in conference play. Mercyhurst is now 6-6 at home this season, and they have just five game left in Erie.
Â
How it Happened:
In the early going, both teams were getting runners on base. But it was Mercyhurst who struck first.
Casey Smith hit a two RBI single and then Jake Toporek plunked two straight batters to walk in a third run.
Jayden Walker continued to be dominant in conference play. He hit doubles in both the second and third innings.
Â
Aidan Kelly was hot on the mound for the Lakers through the first four innings. He allowed just one hit, but the Seahawks made contact all day. In the fifth inning, they finally made Kelly pay. Jake Manella hit a game-tying three-run homer to tie things up. But the tie game didn't last long after
Landon DiBeradin hit an RBI single. Toporek then hit his fourth batter of the game to give
Ethan Adams an opportunity to extend that lead. But Justin Roitman entered the game and kept it a one-run affair with a strikeout to close the fifth.
Â
The Seahawks started to threaten again in the seventh inning. They scored the tying run on a passed ball to even the game at four before Bryce Phelps gave them their first lead of the afternoon with an RBI single.
Jayden Walker gave Mercyhurst a bit of life in the ninth inning with a two out home run. But Roitman recovered to close things out and earn his third win of the season. Â
