Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst closed out their first ever home series with a 1-0 loss to Coppin State on Sunday afternoon. The series served as their first conference series of the season and first ever NEC series. Following the loss, the Lakers will play one more home game as they welcome Canisius before they get on the road for an NEC series against Delaware State.
Â
How it Happened:
Kaden Straily and
Brandon Arnold took the mound for the Eagles and Lakers, respectfully. Both had outings that would earn wins in most games as neither allowed a hit through three innings. Straily struck out four through the first three and Arnold struck out two. But in the fourth, Coppin State broke the stalemate with a pair of hits. Daniel Moore kicked off the inning with a walk and two straight singles helped to drive him across for the lone run of the afternoon.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Mercyhurst finally broke up Straily's no hitter. Joey Trivisonno doubled to right field with two outs and got to third base on a passed ball. But after a
Chris Juchno walk, the scoring threat was ended with a
Ranciel Ventura fly out. Neither side grabbed a hit again until
Ray Altmeyer singled to open up the second.
Aaron Keating came into pinch run for him after he advanced to second base as Mercyhurst looked to tie the game. But back-to-back outs once again closed the inning. The Lakers last threat came in the form of a two out double from
Eric Chorba, Justin Ritz struck
Jayden Walker out and then sat the Lakers down in order to record his second save of the series.
