Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst closed out their four-game homestand with a 7-5 loss on Tuesday against Canisius. The Lakers went 1-3 in their first homestand of the season but saw some encouraging play as they get into the conference portion of their schedule. They have nine more conference series this season.
Â
How it Happened:
Freshman
Greg Schmidt took the mound for the Lakers as he made his first start of the 2025 season. He got through the first inning without allowing a hit. But the Golden Griffins loaded up the bases to start the second. Schmidt was able to get out of the jam unscathed after he struck out Bennett Cox. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lakers took a 3-0 lead on a
Chandler Powell home run that bounced off the scoreboard in left field. Trent Rumley got one back for Canisius in the third with an RBI double in the third inning, but the lead was bumped back up to three in the bottom half of the inning after
Jayden Walker singled in
Chris Juchno.
Â
Cox got the Golden Griffins within one run in the fourth inning with a two-run blast. The Lakers answered back again though after
Casey Smith drove in his third run of the season on an RBI double. But it was the last time the Lakers crossed the plate in the game. In the seventh inning, the tide began shift for the Golden Griffins. JC Spinosa kicked off the scoring after he scored on an error. A pinch hitting Thomas Zwirecki then hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at five a piece. An inning later they took the lead for good. The inning started with a batter getting hit by a pitch and then an Andrew Marcello bunt that was a bang bang play saw the Lakers skipper,
Jimmy Latona, getting ejected. Owen Silliman then drove in the lead run with a sacrifice fly before Cox scored on a wild pitch to give them a 7-5 lead. Over the final two innings, the Lakers went six up and six down to finish the game as Ethan Hennessy earned the save.
