Men and Women’s Tennis Grab Huge Conference Wins During NEC Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Teaneck, NJ.- Both the men and women's tennis teams grabbed huge conference wins during their time in New Jersey. The men upset FDU in a 4-3 contest to give them their first conference loss of the year. The women picked up a 4-3 win over Wagner as both teams walked away with a 1-1 record on the weekend.  
 
How it Happened:
Men's vs FDU:
The men pulled off a big win against FDU for the first Division I conference win in program history. They kicked it off by claiming the double's point as the team of Danylo Rekun and Lukas Cabue earned a big 7-5 win over Joshua Oboniye and Andrew Nicolae and David Mengher and Mykhailo Polishchuk took a 6-4 decision over Tauras Mickus and Tze En Gareth Ong.
 
FDU was able to knot things at one point a piece by taking the first singles point of the match when Gryffin Minor beat Colm Schultz 0-6, 4-6. But back-to-back wins by the Lakers had them in a prime position to seal things. Cabue took down Thomas Linley 6-4, 6-2 and then his doubles partner, Rekun, earned a hard fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory. Nicolae was able to draw things closer with a 1-6, 0-6 win over Derek Wisnes before Sviatoslav Koliadynskyi sealed things in a 6-2, 6-3 win over Asaf Schwartz.
 
Men's vs Wagner:
The Lakers were looking to take their second NEC victory of the weekend but ultimately fell short against Wagner. They once again took the doubles point with Rekun and Cabue winning 6-3 over Damian Janiszewski and Antoine Nivault. But Wagner picked up a 4-6 win over Kolidynskyi and Schultz. Mengher and Polischuk continue to thrive in the No. 3 slot though as their 6-4 win over Eddie Schmidt and Pablo Rodriguez gave Mercyhurst the doubles point.
 
Rekun gave Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead after he beat Carlos Rodriguez 6-2, 3-6, 6-0. But Pablo Rodriguez got some revenge with a 2-6, 2-6 win to draw things back to 2-1. Lukas Cabue earned the final point for Mercyhurst after he claimed a win over Schmidt, but the Seahwaks closed things with three straight wins to earn the comeback win. They clinched with a Nivault 1-6, 6-2, 1-6 win over Polishchuk.
 
Women's vs FDU:
The women took their first loss in their last four attempts on Saturday against FDU. In doubles action, the Knights took the sweep to claim the point. Daria Rogova and Andjela Mrvaljevic lost the opening match in the No. 2 slot to Katsiaryna Kostsina and Anastasia Lim 3-6. Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy fell to Yelena Kim and Namie Isago 4-6 and Kiersten Brown and Sara Bertolez dropped their first doubles match of the weekend 5-7.
 
In singles, FDU clinched with three wins in the first four finishes. Alena Kubanova took down Murphy 0-6, 0-6 before Rogova earned the Lakers first and only point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lim. But Isago beat Dean 4-6, 4-6 and Kim beat Bertolez 1-6, 1-6 to close things out.
 
Women's vs Wagner:
The women earned a big comeback win over Wagner. The Lakers were slept in doubles action. Brown and Bertolez fell 0-6 to Daniela Hernandez and Samantha Bentsianov. Rogova and Mrvaljevic dropped their match 2-6 to Dariana Vera and Victoria Madail. Dean and Murphy also dropped their match in a 6-6, 6-8 loss to Liepa Sataite and Claudia Lindsey.
 
In singles, Rogova took the first win 6-3, 6-4 against Madrail. Dean then gave Mercyhurst the lead in a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sataite. Paula Ysabelle Uy tied things back up at two with a 4-6, 1-6 win over Bertolez. Murphy regave the Lakers the lead with her win over Hernandez. But Lindsey's win over Sierra Rodgers made the final match between Brown and Vera winner take all. It was Brown who came out on top to seal the 4-3 win for Mercyhurst.
 
Next Match:
The men will be back in action next weekend when they play Cleveland State and Penn State. The women will return to the court on Tuesday, April 8th against St. Bonaventure.
