Mercyhurst Splits Doubleheader with Delaware State

Dover, De.- The Mercyhurst baseball team kicked off their weekend with a pair of games in Dover, De. on Friday. The Lakers fell in game one 8-4 before they came out and dominated game two in 9-1 decision. Jayden Walker hit two home runs on the day, Landon DiBeradin scored three runs in game two and Daniel Thomas grabbed his second win of the season.

How it Happened:
Game One:
Delaware State kicked the day off with the first runs in the bottom of the first. The Dover native Alec Rodriguez hit a two RBI single to give the Hornets an early lead. The action didn't come until Joey Trivisonno hit a double in the fourth inning. It served as the Lakers first hit of the day. But DiBeradin grounded out as the Hornets shut down the threat. Jaryn Sample tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning with a one out RBI single. But Chris Juchno got Mercyhurst back in the ball game in the fifth when he hit a two-run blast to right field. In the next inning, the Lakers tied the game with a Trivisonno sacrifice fly. Delaware State was able to regain their lead in the 6th back to two runs after Sample hit another RBI single. But it didn't stay that way for long. Walker hit his first long ball of the day to tie things at four. Just as things were looking like it was going to be an extra inning ball game though, the Hornets drove in four runs on three hits and left two on base in the bottom frame as they ran away with just their third win of the season.

Game Two:
In game two, the Lakers got off to a quick start and never looked back. Walker hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first as the Lakers were the ones to take a quick lead this time. DiBeradin added another run after he stole two bases and then scored on a passed ball in the second inning. Just as things looked like they may turn around for the Hornets, Brandon Boyd hit a single but got thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Chris Juchno then opened up the next inning with a leadoff homer to make it a 4-0 ball game. There wasn't another run until the top of the sixth when Ranciel Ventura hit a sacrifice fly for his first and only RBI of the day. In the eighth inning, the Lakers tacked on four more runs, including two on a two RBI single from Eric Chorba. In the game, Daniel Thomas went eight innings and was dominant. He allowed just five hits and struck out four batters as the Lakers crusied to their third victory of the season and second NEC victory.

Next Game:
The Lakers will look to take their first ever NEC series tomorrow afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and the action can all be caught on the NEC Front Row.
