Women’s Hockey Hosts Delaware to Resume AHA Play

The Mercyhurst women's hockey team looks to bounce back at home this weekend against Delaware. Puck drop for game one is at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31. Game two is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. 
 
Previous Results
The Lakers are 3-5-0 this season and 0-2-0 in AHA play. They hosted No. 5/6 Minnesota Duluth in their first series. Game one ended 4-3 in overtime and game two ended 5-3. The second series was on the road at New Hampshire where they swept the Wildcats. Game one ended 3-2 and game two finished in a 4-0 shutout. The Lakers then hosted No. 10 St. Lawrence in a series split. The Lakers picked up their second shutout of the season in game one, 1-0, and dropped game two 3-0. Mercyhurst then played No. 6 Penn State on the road. The Nittany Lions proved to the toughest opponent yet as they took the series 3-0 and 6-1. Most recently, the Lakers hosted No. 8/9 UConn. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in game one. The second game featured seven goals, with the Huskies prevailing 4-3. 
 
Matchup History
This is the first ever matchup between the two teams. Delaware is in its inaugural season as the 45th Division I women's hockey team. The Lakers have never lost their inaugural matchup against a conference opponent. Here are the results from each of those matchups: 
  • RMU 12/9/05 W 5-1, 
  • Syracuse 11/15/08 W 4-1, 
  • Lindenwood 10/28/11 W 7-0, 
  • RIT 9/28/12 W 6-2, 
  • Penn State 11/30/12 W 5-0. 
The Lakers are also 3-2 on Halloween. Their last Halloween matchup was 10/31/15, where they beat RIT 4-3 in OT.
 
Lakers to Look Out for
Julia Perjus leads the Laker's goals and points column with five goals and two assists for seven points. Perjus has two multi-goal games this season, a .500 faceoff win percentage, and the highest net rating at +6. The Stockholm native also scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against No. 10 St. Lawrence in the Laker's second home series. 
 
Nayeon Kim currently leads the team in assists with six. The freshman from South Korea has the second highest points on the team and second highest net rating at +3. 
 
Makayla Javier has one goal, four assists, and five points this season. The Laker's captain scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win at New Hampshire where she was then named AHA Defender of the Week. Her 27 blocked shots put her at third in the nation and Abby Poitras follows her in the standings with 26 blocked shots. 
 
Magdalena Luggin started between the pipes against No. 5/6 Minnesota Duluth and recorded a career-high 47 saves in the first game and another 28 saves in the second game. Luggin was the winning netminder in game one of the New Hampshire series. The Austrian native then posted 25 saves and a shutout victory against No. 10 St. Lawrence, which led to her being named the AHA Goaltender of the Week. Most recently, Luggin made 37 saves in a 1-1 draw against No. 8/9 UConn and 30 saves in the 4-3 loss. 
 
Scouting Delaware 
  • The Blue Hens dropped their opening series at home against LIU. 
  • They picked up their first win as a program in a series against Holy Cross, where they won 2-1. 
  • Penn State and Robert Morris proved to be the Blue Hen's toughest opponents. 
  • However, they narrowly lost 2-1 in OT and 1-0 in the second game in their series against Syracuse. 
  • Katelynn Charlton (3G, 2A, 5 PTS), Lexie Lonask (0G, 3A, 3 PTS, 37 BLKS) lead the team. 
  • Lonask's 37 blocks lead the nation.
