The Mercyhurst men's soccer team finishes their eight-game stretch of away matches this Thursday at Saint Francis. This Sunday, Oct. 5, they will celebrate their 50th anniversary and honor their seniors before kickoff against Howard.
Previous Outings
Mercyhurst is 0-5-3 overall and 0-0-1 in the NEC. They recently opened conference play at LIU this past Sunday where they earned a point in a 0-0 draw. This was the Lakers third shutout of the season. Prior to that, on Monday, Sept. 22, the team traveled to Pitt. A goal in the 7th minute gave them the lead for most of the first half. Pitt fought back and ended up winning a close game 2-1.
Lakers to Look Out for
Alvar Silva has been one of the biggest offensive providers this season. Silva scored his first goal of the season early in the first half of the game at Pitt. The Laker's number 10 leads the team in shots (11) and has started and played in seven matches.
Marcel Duffau has been another provider for the Lakers. Duffau scored the opening goal at Canisius off of a direct free kick. The Chilean native is one of three players to start and play in all eight matches and is second on the team in shots (5).
Gonzalo Onrubia has started in goal the past two games for the Lakers. Onrubia recorded nine saves and a clean sheet against LIU and was named an NEC Prime Performer for his efforts.
Scouting Saint Francis
- The Red Flash are 1-7-1 overall and 1-0 in NEC play.
- They opened the season on the road against Xavier and fell 3-0.
- They struggled to find the back of the net in their first four matches until they played a thriller at Loyola Maryland that ended in a 3-3 draw.
- They recently opened conference play at Le Moyne and won 2-1.
- Alvaro Planas is SFU's highest contributor with one goal and two assists.
- Jonah Wolf has a goal and an assist as well as leading the team in shots with six.
Scouting Howard
- The Bison are 1-7-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
- They opened the season at home versus San Diego State. They held off the Aztecs until the 70th minute, then fell 2-0.
- They picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw at Navy.
- Their lone win came on the road in a 1-0 shutout over VMI.
- This past week has been the biggest challenge as they played at #16 Duke before opening conference play at New Haven this past Sunday.
- Daniil Kaban leads the Bison's scoring column with two goals in nine games played.
- Naim Robinson and Roman Stallings each have a goal and are two of five players to start and play in all nine games this season.
