Lakers Secure Shutout Win Over Robert Morris

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team continued their impressive form with a commanding 7-0 victory over Robert Morris on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers' offense fired on all cylinders, while goaltender Magdalena Luggin earned her first career shutout. 

How It Happened: 

The Lakers took control early, with Chantal Ste-Croix opening the scoring just 2:35 into the game on an even-strength goal assisted by Megan McKay and Julia Schalin. Mercyhurst doubled their lead at 6:59 when Kylee Mahoney buried a goal, assisted by Sofia Nuutinen and Thea Johansson

The second period saw the Lakers extend their lead. Jade Maisonneuve netted an unassisted goal at 12:49 to make it 3-0, followed by a power-play tally from McKay at 14:01, assisted by Schalin and Thea Johansson. Mercyhurst added a short-handed goal at 16:40 from Marielle Parks, further solidifying their lead. 

In the final period, the Lakers continued their dominance. Nuutinen lit the lamp with a power-play goal at 5:12, assisted by Sofia Ljung and Mary Sweetapple. Maisonneuve capped off the night with her second goal at 6:08, assisted by Parks and Regina Metzler

Notable Performances: 

  • Magdalena Luggin stopped all 21 shots she faced to secure her first career shutout. 

  • Sofia Nuutinen contributed a goal and an assist for her third multi-point effort in five games. 

Special Teams: 

The Lakers went 2-for-5 on the power play and added a short-handed goal, while holding Robert Morris scoreless on three power-play opportunities.

Mercyhurst (14-12-1, 9-4-0 AHA) will look to complete the series sweep over Robert Morris (8-16-3, 2-9-2 AHA) on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is scheduled for 1 PM.
