Lakers Complete Sweep of RMU, Earn Sixth Straight AHA Win

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Women's Ice Hockey team secured an emphatic 6-0 victory against Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With a hat trick from Vanessa Upson and strong goaltending from Jorden Mattison, the Lakers extended their winning streak in conference play to six games and have now won six of their last seven games overall. 

How It Happened: 

The Lakers set the tone early, with Mary Kromer opening the scoring at 7:56 of the first period off assists from Avery Norman and Sydney Pedersen. Mercyhurst carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. 

In the second period, Mercyhurst exploded offensively, scoring three goals in under four minutes. Sydney Pedersen netted the first at 11:40, assisted by Megan McKay and Julia Schalin. Vanessa Upson added another at 13:58, with helpers from Chantal Ste-Croix and Schalin. Regina Metzler capped off the period with a goal at 15:05, assisted by Jade Maisonneuve and Sofia Ljung, extending the lead to 4-0. 

The third period saw the Lakers maintain their momentum. Upson added her second goal at 8:48, assisted by Ste-Croix and McKay, before completing her hat trick on the power play at 10:56, assisted by McKay and Thea Johansson

Notable Performances: 

  • Vanessa Upson recorded a hat trick, bringing her season total to nine goals. 

  • Megan McKay notched three assists and now has points in three straight games. 

  • Jorden Mattison stopped all 20 shots she faced to earn her fifth shutout of the season. 

Special Teams: 

Mercyhurst went 1-for-2 on the power play while holding Robert Morris scoreless on their three opportunities.

The Lakers (15-12-1, 10-4-0 AHA) will prepare for another crucial AHA series next weekend when they travel to RIT. Puck drop for Friday's game is set for 6 PM.
