Volleyball Earns First Division 1 Win

Loretto, Pa. - After starting the season 0-3, the Mercyhurst Volleyball team matched up with Siena College at the Red Flash Classic at Saint Francis University.  It took five sets, but the Lakers earned their first win of the season and made history with their first win as a Division 1 program.

How it Happened

A Paige Miller kill gave the Lakers an early lead in set number one.  The Lakers went on a quick 5-0 run, coming off the serve of Alyssa Krause.  After a 5-0 run by the Saints, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run, taking a commanding 20-12 lead in set one.  Kelsie Gaiter-Davis took her turn serving and she helped the Lakers close out set one 25-15.

Set two was a back-and-forth battle that was started by an Abby Miller kill.  The Saints led 20-13 before the Lakers picked up three quick points to cut into the lead.  Late in the set, Paige Miller found an opening for a kill to make it 24-20, but the Saints grabbed the last point and took the set 25-20.

The Saints took set three 26-24.  Late in the set, Lilliana Mook and Paige Miller picked up kills to take a 24-23 lead, but the Saints scored the next three points to take the set.  The Saints led 2-1.

Paige Miller continued her stellar match with a kill and a service ace midway through the fourth set to give the Lakers a 16-10 lead.  Lilliana Mook grabbed two kills to extend that lead.  The Lakers closed out the set with a 25-21 win and tied the match up at two sets apiece.

The Lakers held off the Saints in set five as the Saints made multiple attempts to come back, but Paige Miller, Andrea Zaric, and company did not let that happen as the Lakers took set five 15-9.
