Erie, PA- Mercyhurst Field Hockey played their home opener today as they faced NEC opponent Sacred Heart. The Lakers fell 0-1 in a hard-fought game until the very end.
How it Happened
The first half was an even matchup, as Mercyhurst racked up eight saves and allowed no goals the entire half. Both teams fought to score but came up short as the half ended with a score of 0-0. The third quarter was just as much of a close fight, as the Lakers held Sacred Heart scoreless again. Mercyhurst had two saves, but could not find the scoreboard as the third quarter ended and the count remained 0-0. The fourth quarter heated up as Mercyhurst took two shots, one by sophomore Rachel Kosowski and the other taken by junior Marina Evert. Despite a great effort, both shots were deflected by the Pioneers. When it looked like the game was going to head into overtime, Sacred Heart scored with less than one minute left. This left Mercyhurst with little time to respond and they fell by a score of 0-1. Goalkeeper Kayla Desormeau tallied up 12 saves on the day, while junior Jen Kemp and freshman Skylar Sarge both had one defensive save.
