Lakers Tennis Kicks off season

Tennis Plays in Allegheny Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Meadville, Pa.- Mercyhurst Tennis kicked off their fall schedule this past weekend at the Allegheny Invitational. After the Saturday slate was canceled due to rain, the Lakers competed for the first time as a Division I squad. Mercyhurst picked up some big wins that in the tournament action that they'll look to build off of.
 
How it Happened
The Men's team had three players walk away with wins in singles competition on Sunday, Lukas Cabue Valverde beat Thomas Buchard of Edinboro 7-6, 0-6, 1-0 (10-7) in his first outing of the 2024-2025 season. Danylo Rekun followed it up with a win over Walsh's Lukas Kohler 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8). Derek Winsnes picked up the Lakers' final singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Fabricio Sosa Pons of Edinboro.
 
The Lakers also had four doubles wins. Rekun and Colm Schultz defeated the Edinboro pairing of Buchard and Stanislas Noel 6-3. Valverde and Winsnes beat Oberlin's Zain Makada and Max Brose 6-3 as well. The duo also picked up a 6-4 win over Allegheny's Will Jarvie and Oliver Erkens. Avik Agrawal and Hernandez Briones got the final win of the day with a 7-5 victory over Oliver Faranda and Ben Tichauer of Oberlin.
 
For the Women, Kayla Dean got her first win of the season over Tara Abildayeva of Walsh 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7). Daria Rogova picked up a strong win in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Fighting Scots Cecilia Carayol. Sierra Rodgers also won against the Fighting Scots Rafaella De Almeida in a decisive 6-2, 6-1 match. Rodgers picked up a 6-1 doubles win with Kiersten Brown over Luciana Ponce and De Almeida of Edinboro. The final win of the day came from Dean and Rosin Murphy over Walsh's Rachel Kibler and Carla Padberg 6-2.
 
Next Game
The Lakers travel to Indiana for the IUP Duals next Saturday, September 7.
