Women’s Tennis Gears Up for PSAC Tournament

4/28/2024 12:00:00 PM

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's tennis begins their post season tomorrow, April 29th, when they make the trip to Slippery Rock to compete against the Rock. The two teams matchup in the quarterfinals of the tournament with things kicking off at 3:00 p.m.

A Look Back

The Lakers have had a great season to this point, holding a record of 16-5 while going 4-2 in the PSAC. The team started off well with four wins in their first five tries of the year, including a pair of sweeps in that time. They did not slow down from there, winning nine of their first 10 matches with a season-high eight-match win streak from February 13th to the 8th of March. The team also ended the regular season hot with five wins in their last six contests, breaking out the brooms in each of those victories and now looks to carry that momentum into the tournament in search of their first championship since 2019.

Where They Stand

With their 4-2 mark in the conference, the Lakers are the third seed in the PSAC West with Slippery Rock just in front at 5-1 while IUP finished as the only unbeaten with a record of 6-0. In the East, Millersville claimed the top spot at 6-0 while West Chester finished second at 6-1 with Bloomsburg rounding out the top three at 5-2.

Scouting the Rock

Slippery Rock finished the regular season 12-6 while going 5-1 in the PSAC West for the second seed. The Lakers will look to do something no other team has been able to do this year; beat the Rock on their own course. The team is 7-0 to this point at home with four of those wins coming in the last two weeks, including a 6-1 win over Mercyhurst on the 16th of April. The other three wins over that stretch have all been sweeps, showing SRU's dominance at home. Much like the Lakers they come into the matchup playing well of late with wins in each of their last six matches with their last loss being a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Charleston back on April 6th.

Next Match

With a win against SRU, the team would move on to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The Lakers would head to Bloomsburg for the semifinals and championship matchup with the semis set for Friday, May 3rd, with a new champion being crowned the following day.
