Lakers Downed in WWPA Championships

La Mirada, Ca. - Mercyhurst women's water polo returned to the pool today after a first round win in their first contest in the WWP conference tournament, looking for more success. They were met by the hosts the tournament, Biola, with their counterpart using their home pol advantage and a strong run in the end to secure the win 15-8.

Highlights

The two teams play each other even in the early going with the Lakers holding a one-goal lead at the en dot the first period, 4-3. Grace Brzyski was the go-to scorer for the Lakers in the early going as she found the back of the net twice in the opening two minutes of the contest to help her team jump out in front 2-0. From there, Biola responded with three straight goals before Allie Dombkowski and Rachel Vlietstra both scored in the final two minutes of the frame.

Biola ended up wining the second as they kept the Lakers without a goal while scoring three times themselves to take a 6-4 lead into the halftime break. Mercyhurst made the right adjustment going into the second half and managed to score three times in the third to make it a 10-7 game going into the final eight minutes. Vlietstra scored the first goal of the third of the third to give her two for the game while Bri Allstun got in on the action with back-to-back scores to help her team stay within striking distance.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Biola turned it on late and scored six of the final seven goals in the game, outpacing Mercyhurst 5-1 in the fourth to help them build out their leas in the seven-goal final. Alexa Corrao managed to get on the board in the final frame at the 2:32 mark, but her efforts were not enough in the end to pull off the comeback.

Brisk led the team in points on the day with three, scoring a pair of goals while having one assist. There were five other Lakers who finished with multiple points in the game with only Bri Allstun and Rachel Vlietstra seeing those points coming from there scoring as they tied Brzyski for the team-lead in goals with two.
