4/27/2024 9:22:00 PM

California, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's tennis went on the road to see the Vulcans in the final match of their regular season schedule, grabbing their fourth win, and fourth sweep, in a row to move to 16-5 on the year.

How it Happened

Doubles play began the way the team wanted with Mercyhurst able to grab all three bouts. Daria Rogova and Sara Bertolez Puente made quick work of their counterpart at the number two spot with a 6-0 win while Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy had similar results, putting up a 6-2 win. Valentine Budin and Kiersten Brown had the toughest fight on their hands as the team's number three, but still managed to come away with the win, 6-4.

The Lakers had a pair of dominant performances at the top of their singles lineup in Dean and Rogova. Dean played as the team's number one and managed to grab a 6-0 win in her first set before grabbing a 6-1 win in the second to grab the point. Rogova played similarly out of the two spot, winning 6-0, 6-2.

The four other bouts proved to be closer ones with each Laker seeming to be pushed, but still managed to come out on top. Brown out of the five spot was able to win 6-3, 6-3 for a competitive yet convincing win while Roisin Murphy had to a fight for a 7-5 win in her first stanza before having an easier time the second time around with a 6-2 win. Budin's match at the sixth spot went similar to Murphy's as the Laker won her first set 6-3, but needed to turn it on in the second to grab the 7-5 win.

Sara Bertolez Puente was the lone Laker to see her match go to three sets, but still managed to come out with the win. It was a 6-3 win in the opening canto for Mercyhurst's number four before falling 7-5 in the second. She ended up rebounding, though, and took the decisive third set to secure the sweep for her team.

The team now eyes the post season with the PSAC Tournament up first. The team is set to make the trip to Bloomsburg, Pa. this upcoming weekend for the tournament with competition kicking off on Friday, April 3rd, with a champion being crowned the following day.
