Loretto, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's water polo wrapped up the regular season portion of their schedule for the 2024 campaign Saturday afternoon with the team taking on Saint Francis, dropping the contest 15-8. The Red Flash were able to play sturgeon defensively through the first three frame, helping them to the seven-goal win.
How it Happened
SFU managed to jump out in front to a 4-1 lead at the end of the opening period thanks to their strong defensive effort. Every time the Lakers managed to start go on the attack, their counterpart had an answer and kept Mercyhurst from mounting any serious momentum. The Lakers did manage to dent the twine once in the frame with Allie Dombkowski picking up right she left ff a week ago with the first goal of the game.
The second and third quarters are more of the same as SFU's defense continued to stifle the Lakers. In the second frame it was Marley Hanlon who got on the board while Dombkowksi got her second score of the game in the third to make it 3-1.
Mercyhurst nagen to break out in the final period pf play as they managed to score on five occasions. Dombkowski continued to lead the charge for her team with a trio of those handful of goals belonging to her. The senior's efforts were not quite enough, though, to help her team end on top as Mercyhurst fell in the end on the road.
Highlights
Allie Dombkowski was the go-too scorer for Mercyhurst in this one as she finished with a team-high five goals in the game. A trio of Lakers scored one goal apiece with freshmen Freya Green and Marley Hanlon each able to find the back of the net while Sakura Gavin rounded out the group.
What's Next
The team turns their attention to the WWPA Championships. The team will head to the west coast to La Mirada, Ca. as Biola hosts the conference tournament beginning on Friday, April 26th, with a new champion being crowned on the 28th.
