Lakers Fall Short in Comeback Attempt Against Indy

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Mercyhurst Men's Lacrosse team looked to bounce back after their week one loss when they traveled to #9 UIndy for a top-20 matchup. A late comeback attempt fell short as the Greyhounds walked away with an 8-7 win.    

How it Happened 

The Greyhounds got on the board first in this snowy matchup in Indy. With 7:16 left in the first quarter, the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead. At the end of the first quarter, the Greyhounds led 1-0. In the first quarter, the Lakers were 6-6 in clears, and had nine ground balls. 

Early in the second quarter, the Lakers made a rush to try and tie the game, but a shot by Braden McCard missed high. Late in the quarter, the Greyhounds scored three goals in under a minute to extend their lead to 4-0. Shortly after the Greyhounds extended their lead, the Lakers got on the board, courtesy of a Colin Tardif goal. Braden McCard added an assist on the goal. At the end of two, the Greyhounds led 4-1.  

Just 53 seconds into the third quarter, Ryan Mahoney scored for the Lakers, cutting into the Greyhound lead. As the third quarter played on, the Greyhounds scored twice in under a minute, extending their lead to 6-2. 

The Lakers scored just 28 seconds into the fourth quarter, and it was Colin Tardif once again. It didn't take the Greyhounds long to match that goal, plus add another. The Greyhounds made it 8-3 just like that. The Lakers didn't go away though as Jérémi Phoenix-Lefebvre scored back-to-back goals to cut into the Greyhound lead. With 6:50 left in the fourth quarter, the Lakers went a man up. Colin Schmatz found the back of the net on the man advantage, making it 8-6. With under five minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Lakers got to within one. Ethan Landymore got on the board with a goal of his own. The Lakers made one final rush to tie the game but couldn't get that tying goal.     

Highlights 

Colin Tardif scored his first two goals of the season. 

Braden McCard tallied his first assist of the season on Tardif's first goal. 

Jérémi Phoenix-Lefebvre scored twice in today's game, while also adding an assist. Phoenix-Lefebvre's first two goals of the season. 

Ryan Mahoney scored goal number two for him on the season. Mahoney also had three assists in today's game 

Ethan Landymore scored his first goal of the season late in the fourth quarter. 

Colin Schmatz had a goal and an assist, 

Brett Olney stopped 16 shots in net.    

Next Up 

The Lakers will return home for their home opener next weekend against Wilmington. Start time for that game is set for 1 PM.
