Lakers Set to Host Curtis Robinette Memorial Tournament

2/16/2024 10:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's water polo is set to play within their friendly confines for the first time this spring this upcoming weekend as the Lakers host the Curtis Robinette Memorial Tournament. The team will play four games over the course of two days, hoping the home pool advantage will bring some good luck.

Scouting LIU

Long Island University has played eight games on the season to this point, going 6-2 in that time. They have found plenty of success here of late as they have won each of their last four contests. Each of those victories have been dominant ones as well, winning by double-digits twice with an average margin of victory of just below nine goals per game. The team's defense has been a big reason for their success, allowing 10 or more goals in just two of their wins to this point, making for a very formidable team.

Scouting PSB

Penn State Behrend has yet to compete so far this season, meaning they will have fresh legs coming into the tournament. The Lions will begin with Chapman on Friday before seeing Gannon on the 17th in a 2:00 p.m. before wrapping up Saturday with the Lakers at 5:00 p.m. The team comes off a season in which they finished 3-19, losing their lone matchup of last year with the Lakers, 19-10, and look for some revenge this time around.

Scouting Chapman

Much like Penn State Behrend, Chapman has not seen much action so far this season. The Panthers have played in only one game so far in 2024 with the team taking on Cal State Fullerton on February 9th with Fullerton getting the better of the matchup, 14-7. Chapman finished 9-18 in 2023 and hopes to take a step forward this time around with the Curtis Robinette Memorial Tournament serving as an opportunity for a fast start.

Scouting the Golden Knights

Gannon is 2-5 to this point in the season as they fell in each of their last two games and have dropped there of their last four. The team has had some time off since their last matchup with the Golden Knights not playing since February 3rd when they competed against Villanova in the VMI Invite. The Golden Knights and Mercyuhrst have already seen each other once this season with Gannon getting the better of that matchup, 13-8, and hope for more of the same this time around in the tournament finale.

Next Game

After this weekend, the team goes to Harvard in Cambridge, Ma. to compete in four games. They will begin with Siena on the Saturday, February 24, at 1:30 p.m. before seeing the Crimson that same day. They then return to the pool the next day for a third matchup of the season with La Salle followed by the weekend finale with Wagner at 12:00 p.m.
