Box Score 2 Lewisburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's water polo finished out their weekend with a pair of losses and now come home after an empty weekend. The Lakers fought hard in their two contests, but were not quite able to do enough to get the wins over Bucknell in a 9-7 final before a 11-9 defeat at the hands of Mount St. Mary's.
How it Happened
The Lakers ended up being matched up with Bucknell in their first matchup of the day with the Bison getting the better of their counterparts. It was a tight opening frame with the score standing tied 3-3 by the end of the first eight minutes. Mercyhurst brought a balanced offensive attack to the table in the early going as three different players scored with Rachel Vlietstra, Krista Domaracki, and Freya Green each able to dent the twine. The solid scoring did not give them the lead, though, with the Bison responding after every score before a 2-0 second quarter went the way of Bucknell made it 5-3 at the half.
The Lakers managed to play the opposition even in the seance half, hoping to come from behind in enemy territory. The scoring drought was ended in the third as both Grace Brzyski and Bri Allstun each found the back of the net once apiece in the third before Sakura Gavin got in on the action in the fourth. Gavin proved to be the entire offense in the final frame, scoring twice, but that was not quite enough as the Bison held on in the two-goal decision.
The second game of the day for the Lakers was more of the same as they fell by just two goals. Mount St. Mary's has proven to have Mercyhurst's number so far this season, now beating them for the third time with this one being due to their strong defense in the opening half. The Lakers could muster only one goal in the first period with Marley Hanlon helping get her time on the board while the Mount took a 2-1 lead into the second. MSM outscored their counterparts by one again in the second canto, 3-2, to make it a 5-3 game going into the halftime break with Vlietstra and Brzyski both finding the back of the net once more.
The third period was a tight one with the deficit remaining at two at the end of the frame, 8-6. It was once again Vlietstra getting the job done with her second goal of the game while Sakura Gavin and Alexa Corrao both dented the twine for the first time win this one. The Laker's offense repeated their success in the final eight minutes with three more goals, but the Mount managed to keep pace and retain their two-goal lead until the very end.
Next Game
The Lakers are set to compete once again this upcoming weekend with LIU and Penn State Behrend on Saturday, February 17th, before seeing Chapman and Gannon the following day. The team won't be hitting the road for any of those contests as they play within their friendly confines for the first time this season in the four-game weekend set.
