Box Score 2 Wingate, NC. - The Mercyhurst Men's Lacrosse team opened their 2024 season on the road against #10 Wingate. The Bulldogs got out to an early lead and coasted to a 13-6 win over the Lakers.
How it Happened
An early penalty on the Lakers gave the Bulldogs a man advantage. The Bulldogs capitalized on the advantage and opened the scoring. Just a few seconds later, the Bulldogs struck again, giving them a 2-0 lead in the first minutes of the game. With 9:21 left in the first quarter, the Lakers got on the board. Jaxon Mohawk found the back of the net for the first goal of the season for the Lakers. The Bulldogs score two more times, extending their lead to 4-1. Ryan Mahoney broke the two goal streak by the Bulldogs with his first of the year. The Bulldogs scored twice more before the end up the quarter, but the Lakers got one of their own. Casey Scott found the back of the net for his first of the season. At the end of the first quarter the Bulldogs led the Lakers 6-3.
It was a much quieter second quarter for both sides. The Bulldogs scored three times in the quarter to the Lakers one goal. The lone Laker goal was scored by Braden McCard just before the end of the second quarter. At the end of two quarters the Bulldogs held a 9-4 lead.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored two more times to extend their lead to 11-4. The Lakers had opportunities to cut into the Bulldogs lead, but couldn't get anything past the goaltender.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs added another to make it 12-4. With 9:17 left in the fourth quarter, the Lakers got one back. On the man advantage, Jérémi Lefebvre-Phoenix found Colin Schmatz for a Laker goal to make it 12-5. The Bulldogs were able to get another goal later in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers matched that goal. It was Luke Ingianni who found the back of the net for the Lakers. It was now 13-6 in favor of the Bulldogs and that would eventually be the final score.
