Box Score Washington, D.C. – The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team traveled to the nation's capital for a matchup with the Howard University Bisons. A goal in each half would be enough for the Lakers to pick up a 2-0 victory to conclude their season with a winning record. The Lakers will finish with a 8-7-2 overall record and 5-1-2 conference record.
How it Happened
The first half of today's match consisted of back-and-forth action with both teams only creating a few chances on goal. Both goalkeepers were called upon to make a few saves throughout this time. Howard goalkeeper Liam Keiller made a terrific save in the 26
th minute to prevent the Lakers from scoring. Then, in the 37th minute
Jorge Tallada Torres intercepted a pass and dribbled toward the penalty area. He layed the ball off to
Cade Wurstner who calmly placed the ball into the back of the net. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Lakers at halftime.
The Lakers dominated most of the second half. One of the bigger events of the half came when Troy Matingou received a second yellow in the 65th minute. This resulted in the Bisons going down to 10 men. A few minutes later the Bison goalkeeper made another save on a corner kick to prevent the Lakers from doubling their advantage.
In the final seconds of the match, the Lakers finished with a storybook ending. One of the players who has been crucial and clinical for the Mercyhurst Men's Soccer program for the last four years goes by the name of the
Dylan Sumner. Sumner found himself with the ball with seconds remaining on the clock and slotted the ball home to give the Lakers a 2-0 victory. This was the perfect end to a very successful inaugural season as a Division I university in the Northeast Conference under head coach
Austin Solomon.
