11/24/2024 1:10:00 PM

| Box Score 3 Annapolis, Md.- Mercyhurst officially wrapped up their first season at the Division I level at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference championship tournament. The Lakers finished in eighth place as they were unable to grab a win in the tournament.

How it Happened:
The Lakers came into the tournament as the eighth seed, which left them an uphill battle. Mercyhurst matched up with the No. 3 team in the nation, Fordham, to start the weekend. The Rams wasted little time showing why they're one of the top teams in the country. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Luca Provenziani provided three of the 14 goals. Ben Gavran finally broke through for Mercyhurst and a few minutes later, Keller Sens got Mercyhurst on the board again. Aidan Parrish provided the other two goals for Mercyhurst in the 30-4 loss.

Mercyhurst moved on to face Bucknell in a matchup that could clinch a spot in the fifth-place game. Bucknell got off to a quick start as they were up 7-1 after the first quarter. But Mercyhurst bounced back with four straight goals to start the second period. Asher Jones accounted for two of the goals as the Lakers brought the game back to within two. Jones scored again the third quarter, but it only stopped the bleeding temporarily. Bucknell ended the matchup on 14-2 run to secure a 21-7 win.

The Lakers closed their season in a back-and-forth matchup against John Hopkins. Mercyhurst found themselves trailing 4-2 after the first quarter, but two goals from Ben Gavran helped them tie things up at six at the end of two. Owen Hardner scored twice to open the third period to give Mercyhurst an 8-6 lead. But John Hopkins closed the game on a 4-1 run to help them earn a seventh-place finish at the MAWPC tournament.
