Lakers ready for MAWPC tournament

Men’s Water Polo Enters First MAWPC Championship Weekend

11/21/2024 1:00:00 PM

Erie, Pa.- Mercyhurst is getting set to begin their first MAWPC Championship weekend tomorrow in Annapolis, Md. The Naval Academy is hosting the tournament as the Lakers look to cap off their first Division I season.

On the Road:
The Lakers will once again be on the road as they've been for most of the season. In Annapolis, the Lakers will join Fordham, George Washington, Navy, Wagner, Bucknell, Mount St. Mary's and John Hopkins as they look to make some history. The Lakers, who are still looking for their first conference win at the Division I level, will enter the weekend as the eighth seed. They'll take on Fordham to open things.

Fordham, who is ranked third in the country, is having a record year. The Lakers will look to play spoiler and break up the Rams perfect season. If the Lakers upset Fordham, they would have a date with the winner of Wagner-Bucknell. If Mercyhurst loses, they'll play the loser of that game with a spot in the fifth-place game on the line. With a loss in that game, they would play in the seventh-place game.

The Lakers will look to lean on Sophomore Asher Jones, who has tallied 56 goals this season, Junior Owen Hardner and Freshman Petar Vujovic. Goalies Tony Golin and Alex Gyde will likely continue to split time in net as Mercyhurst treks through their first Division I championship tournament.

Next Game:
The action all starts at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd. The Lakers will play in the first game of the tournament against Fordham. It can all be caught on Game on Live Studio.
