10/6/2024 3:53:00 PM

Box Score Erie, PA - The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team finally played a home match after playing their first nine games on the road. A truly spectacular performance from Dylan Sumner propelled the Lakers to a 4-0 victory against the Chicago State University Cougars.
How it Happened
A fairly even first half between the Lakers and Cougars was 0-0 through the first half hour of the match. Then, in the 32nd minute, Mario Ganser played a tremendous ball in to Dylan Sumner who was able to cleanly lift the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The Lakers had eight shots in the first half but only Sumner was able to get on the scoresheet. The score would remain 1-0 at halftime.

The Lakers came out of the locker room full of energy just as they had done this past Thursday against Central Connecticut State.  Dylan Sumner had a great shot in the 50th minute that was curving into the top corner, but Lucas Fontana made a tremendous save. However, Mario Ganser came sprinting into the box to head the ball in off the rebound and put the Lakers up 2-0. Mario Ganser was subbed on in the 29th minute and had already accounted for two goals in just 20 minutes of play.

Mercyhurst would continue to apply heavy pressure and create chances going forward throughout the remainder of the game. Dylan Sumner stood over a corner kick in the 68th minute and played in a dangerous inswinging ball as he often does. This one found a wide-open Kyle Halehale at the back post who headed the ball in to put the Lakers up 3-0.

Cade Wurstner was subbed on in the 74th minute. Not even two minutes later Dylan Sumner played another ball into the box that found Cade Wurstner who scored off of what appeared to be his first touch of the match.

A well-rounded, defensively sound, and offensively electric performance from the Lakers secured a 4-0 victory over Chicago State.
