Lakers Pick Up Star-Studded Shutout on Senior Day

10/24/2024 8:39:00 PM

Box Score Erie, PA - The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team celebrated senior day in emphatic fashion as they shutout the #1 team in the NEC, Le Moyne College, this evening. After a 0-0 scoreline at halftime, two unanswered goals for the Lakers capitalized on their seventh win of the season.

How it Happened
The first action of the match began with a nasty collision between Kyle Halehale of the Lakers and Vito Kreuzpaintner of the Dolphins. The play resulted in a straight red card to for Kreuzpaintner in just the third minute of the match. Kyle Halehale went off injured but came back on later in the match. The Lakers then continued to dominate possession and capitalize on the extra man advantage. Back and forth play between the two sides resulted in twelve total fouls and three shots for each side as the score was 0-0 at halftime.

The second half was much like the first with Mercyhurst moving the ball from side to side and generating multiple shots on goal. The Lakers were inches away from finding the go-ahead goal on multiple occasions. Then, in the 78th minute, the deadlock was finally broken. Benjamin Buckley played a long ball out to Luis Felipe Santos. Santos then dribbled into space, made a move, and played a ball across the net. The ball found the foot of a sprinting Cade Wurstner who put the ball away to make it 1-0.

The Lakers then found a second goal a few minutes later that would go on to seal the match. This time, Alvar Silva played a ball in front of Ryan Mrvcic. Mrvcic played a great ball into the penalty area where captain Dylan Sumner was there to put the ball in the back of the net. Last ditch efforts by the Dolphins were not enough as the Lakers went on to secure a 2-0 victory. This was the first time Le Moyne has lost by a margin of more than one goal this season.

Austin Solomon and the Lakers are now back at the top of the conference as they improve to 7-6-1 with an undefeated 4-0-1 conference record.

Highlights
Dylan Sumner scored his 7th goal of the season and 37th of his career.
Danilo Abayo and the Lakers picked up their fifth shutout of the season.
