Women’s Soccer Ready for Final Two Game Week

10/23/2024 10:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa.- The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer is set to start their final two game week of the 2024 season Thursday when they welcome Chicago State to Erie for the first ever time. The Lakers are coming off a 9-1 win over Delaware State, which featured the second most goals by the Lakers in a contest in the last 20 years.

Continuing to Build:
Mercyhurst finally broke through with all of their offensive weapons on Sunday against Delaware State. In the 9-1-win, Sophomore Maddie Sievering tallied a hat trick and also recorded an assist, which was good enough to give her Co-player of the Week, Rookie of the Week and Prime Performer honors. Graduate Student Emily Mijares and Freshman Morgan Keller each scored twice in the game as well. Everything went well for the Lakers, and they'll hope to replicate that performance in each of their final three games.

Lakers Leaders:
Mijares still has the lead in most goals scored with five, but Senior Karah Van Horn and Sievering each have four. The Lakers have now had 11 players score a goal this season and 15 different players have recorded a point. Van Horn and Graduate Student Alyssa Poleski remain the only two players to start every game. Poleski has played 1,222 minutes, which is 200 minutes more than the next closest player.

Scouting Chicago State:
Much like the Lakers last opponent, Chicago State is still chasing win No. 1. They've scored just seven goals in the 2024 season and have been shut out seven times this year. They'll be counting on Senior Delaney Kenney to get them on the board early as they try to keep up with a dangerous Mercyhurst offense.

Scouting Stonehill:
Stonehill will be one of the Lakers biggest tests since they started conference play. They currently sit at 7-9 and have a 6-2 record in conference play. Stonehill has won five of their last six games as they've been nearly dominating every NEC opponent they've played. Junior Hannah Anselmo leads the way with six goals and five assists, so Mercyhurst will look to slow her down as they aim for what could potentially be three straight wins.

Next Game:
Mercyhurst takes on Chicago State at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 24th. All the action can be caught on the NEC Front Row.
