TOLEDO, Ohio — Mercyhurst University (0-3-0) was defeated by the University of Toledo (2-1-0) with a final score of 6-2 on Sunday at Paul Hotmer Field. The Lakers managed to find the net twice, but Toledo's four first-half goals set the tone for the match.
The first period started with an early goal by the Lakers' Sadie Lewis just 20 seconds into the match, marking her and the Lakers' first goal of the season. Toledo responded in the 6th minute with a goal, leveling the score at 1-1. The match took a turn when Toledo notched two more from penalty kicks in the 37th and 39th minutes, putting Toledo ahead. Toledo extended its lead to 4-1 with a goal in the 44th minute. The Lakers had several attempts, but Toledo's goalkeeper made saves to keep them from closing the gap. The period concluded with Toledo holding a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Lakers' Anamari Bosnjak notched her first goal of the season from a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, narrowing Toledo's lead to 4-2. However, Toledo quickly responded with a goal in the 69th minute to extend its advantage. Strong defensive efforts by Toledo included multiple saves, keeping the Lakers at bay despite shots from Jenna Popowski and Julia Bullock. In the closing stages, Toledo sealed the match with a goal in the 81st minute, bringing the final score to 6-2 in favor of Toledo.
Lewis tallied once and finished with one shot on goal, contributing a pivotal goal for the Lakers. Bosnjak also recorded a goal, converting one of her two shots, both of which were on target. Bullock led the team with five shots, two of which were on goal. Alyssa Alcorn, in goal, posted four saves while facing 18 shots.
