Lakers Unable to Muster Win in Providence

10/22/2024 2:30:00 PM

| Box Score 2 Providence, RI.- The Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo team will still be looking for their first ever Division I conference win as they enter the final weeks of the 2024 season. The Lakers were unable to pick up a win this past weekend as they fell to Brown, Navy, LIU and Wagner.

How it Happened

Freshman Petar Vujovic kicked the weekend off with a six goal game against Navy in the Lakers opening match. Ultimately it wasn't enough, however. Navy's eight goal second quarter made the difference in a contest that ended 18-10.

The Lakers then matched up with Wagner to close out Saturday. Mercyhurst struggled to get things going and Wagner looked to take full advantage of that. Vujovic led the Lakers with four goals as they suffered their second loss of the weekend in an 18-12 final.

Mercyhurst kicked off Sunday with a match against fellow NEC school, LIU. After one quarter, the Lakers found themselves in 5-1 deficit. Things didn't get much easier, as LIU continued to play well offensively. But help from Vujovic, Sophomore Asher Jones and Gavran had the Lakers within three goals for most of the second half. Towards the end, the Sharks pulled away to secure a 19-14 win.

The weekend concluded with a match against Brown. Mercyhurst saw themselves in an early hole, as Brown took a 5-2 lead after one quarter. Vujovic and Sophomore Ben Gavran scored the Lakers goals in the first. Unfortunately, Mercyhurst would only be able get on the board twice more. Brown took a 15-4 victory, as they went on a 10-2 run to close the game.

Next Game
The Lakers return to Erie, where they're 3-1 this season. Back home, they'll play McKendree, Gannon and Salem. Action kicks off on Saturday, October 26th.
