Mercyhurst Falls in Pair of Games

9/23/2023 8:22:00 PM

Providence, RI. - Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo wrapped up day one of action this weekend on Saturday with a pair of games, coming up short in both. Mercyhurst took on Brown first with the Bears coming away with the 18-5 before MIT defeated the Lakers 21-9.

How it Happened

Brown started off strong and never looked back from there as they were able to jump out in front 6-1 in the opening frame as JP Kirouac was able to get the Laker's lone goal of the period. The second quarter was more of the same as Brown continued to dominate, scoring five goals in the frame. Owen Hardner helped Mercyhurst get on the board in the stanza, but his efforts did not go far as Mercyhurst found themselves down 11-2 at the intermission.

The Lakers did all they could in the second half of the contests to keep up with their counterpart, but in the end, were unable to climb out of the whole they had found themsvles in.

Game two was more of the same as MIT went on the attack right away as they were able to score seven goals in the first frame. Mercyhurst's offense did manage to find their rhythm in this one as they scored multiple goals in three of their four frames. They scored twice in the first with Hardner and Teagan Thomas both grabbing a goal. Thomas then did so again in the second canto, joined by Matej Kovacevic.

The Laker's best quarter came in the fourth with the team scoring four goals. Hardner once again was the focal point of the team's attack as he scored one of those goals alongside Thomas, Asher Jones, and Nate Lutz. The scoring outburst was not enough to secure the win, though, as Mercyhurst suffered the 12-goal defeat

Highlights

Owen Hardner led the way for the team on offense with five goals to his line on the day. Teagan Thomas came in close behind for second-most goals with four.

Next Game
