Box Score Lewisburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst men's water polo finished out their weekend with a loss as they fell to LIU. LIU used a strong third period of play in which they scored six times to help them pull ahead and take the game by a final of 14-9.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst was able to keep pace with their counterpart in the early going, finishing the opening quarter behind by only one. Freshman Ben Gavran found his rhythm in the water in the first with him scoring three times in the frame to help Mercyhurst trail 4-3 at the end of the period. The offense for both teams slowed down before the halftime break as there were only a total of three goals scored in the second canto with LIU claiming two to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
LIU was able to make all the right adjustments once play resumed as they scored six times in the third quarter to help them begin to create some separation on the scoreboard. It was not just their offense that got the job done, but their defense as well as they kept Mercyhurst to just one goal in the period as the score stood at 12-5 entering the final period of play.Â
The Lakers put together their best quarter of the game in the fourth as they managed to put the ball in the back of the next four times with four different players getting in on the action. Their efforts were not enough, though, as LIU's run in the third proved to be enough to help them secure the win.
Highlights
Freshman Ben Gavran led the charge on offense for the Lakers with four goals to his line in the game. His best stretch came in the opening period of play as he scored all three of the team's goals in the frame. Fellow freshman Asher Jones was the only other Laker on the day to score multiple times as he scored once in both the third and fourth quarters.
