Box Score 1 Lewisburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo traveled to Bucknell this weekend to play three games with the first two of those coming on Saturday. The Lakers faced Salem in game on with the Tigers taking that one by a final of 18-4 before Mercyhurst saw a defeat at the hands of Mount St. Mary's, 15-9.
How it Happened
The opening period of play in game one was a defensive battle as there was only one goal scored, courtesy of Ben Gavran, to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead going into the second. Salem found their rhythm on that side of the water in the second canto as they scored six times to take a 6-1 lead into the halftime break.
The break did not cool the Tigers down as they managed to find the back of the net five times in the third compared to Mercyhurst's two as Salem grew out their lead. The final frame proved to the best for Salem as they pulled away with seven goals in the 11-goal victory.
Mount St. Mary's proved to be the aggressors in their bout with the Lakers as they were able to jump out in front and never looked back. Mercyhurst could muster only one goal in the opening half with Keller Sens finding the back of the net in the second period. His lone goal proved to be a moot point in the opening 16 minutes as the Mount scored seven times, going into the halftime break up by six.
Mercyhurst did manage to find their groove in the final period of play as they scored six times. Teagan Thomas, Matej Kovacevic, and Ben Gavran each found the back of the net two times apiece to help Mercyhurst some life. It was a case of too little, too late, though, as they ultimately fell by six.
Highlights
Teagan Thomas and Ben Gavran led the way on offense as they both had three goals apiece on the day while Owen Hardner joined his Laker teammates with multiple goals as he finished with two as he scored twice against Salem.
