ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team has announced their Assistant Captains for the 2023-24 season.
Vanessa Upson, Mary Kromer, and Ena Nystrøm will all wear the "A" on their sweater next season.
Coach Mike Sisti exclaimed his choice stating, "We are fortunate to have so many quality people in our program. Ena, Mary, and Vanessa will be great complimentary leaders along with Sara Boucher." He added, "This is an awesome group of student-athletes to work with every day."
Vanessa Upson is returning as an Assistant Captain this season. Upson has been a key forward on the ice, netting 35 goals in 72 contests. Most recently, she was awarded a spot on the All-CHA Second Team and has earned a handful of CHA Player of the Week honors.
Vanessa noted, "It's an incredible honor to be named assistant captain of this team. With the talented group, we have it's very exciting to be a leader the team looks up to and respects. We have a great group of leadership this year that's going to help this team succeed."
Mary Kromer is the next Laker to wear the "A". Kromer is a three-year member of the Lakers and has skated in 62 tilts. She's earned 10 points for the team and shows her leadership off the ice as well.
Kromer exclaimed, "I'm so excited to have the honor of being an assistant captain to such a talented team. I'm looking forward to this upcoming season and hoping to lead the team into some big victories."
Netminder Ena Nystrøm is the third and final Assistant Captain for the squad. Ena picked up CHA Goaltender of the Year last season and was named CHA Goaltender of the Week numerous times. Throughout her career, Nystrøm has played in net for 85 contests and picked up eight shutouts, six coming from last season.
Ena stated, "I appreciate the honor of being named an assistant captain and am looking forward to leading our hardworking team to another championship".
