Luggin’s 25 Saves Lift Women’s Hockey to Shutout Win Over #10 St. Lawrence

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's hockey team hosted #10 St. Lawrence in their second home series of the season. Julia Perjus netted an early goal while Magdalena Luggin made numerous crucial saves as the Lakers blanked the Saints 1-0.

Mercyhurst (3-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) took an early lead in the first period, with Julia Perjus scoring her fifth goal of the season at 16:24. This one was assisted by Nayeon Kim and Abby Poitras. The Lakers maintained offensive pressure on St. Lawrence (0-3-0, 0-0-0 ECAC). Despite the Saint's attempts to equalize, the Laker's defense held strong. This was especially present during a penalty kill late in the frame. The period closed with the Lakers up 1-0.

Mercyhurst opened the second period with a strong offensive push, highlighted by winning the opening faceoff and creating early scoring opportunities. Despite a handful of shots from Jessica Ciarrocchi and Jade Maisonneuve, St. Lawrence consistently denied the attempts. Kim and Payten Evans recorded some shots on goal as the Lakers tried to add to their lead. Makayla Javier blocked a few shots as the defense remained strong. The Lakers controlled the pace in the final minutes, with consistent faceoff wins by Regina Metzler and Sophie McKinley. The period concluded with the Lakers up 1-0.

Mercyhurst continued their defensive stance in the third period, starting with an early save by Luggin just seconds into play. Metzler was active offensively, taking multiple shots, though they were either wide or saved by the St. Lawrence goaltender. Midway through the period, the Lakers had a power play opportunity following a tripping penalty on the Saints. The Saints' recorded a penalty kill of their own to keep the score. Luggin continued to make big saves, combined with blocked shots by Poitras and others, secured the Lakers' 1-0 victory. This was the Laker's second shutout of the season and Luggin is the second Mercyhurst netminder to record a shutout.

Game two will take place tomorrow, Oct. 4 with a 1:00 p.m. puck drop.
