Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Baseball sees their first action in the month of March this weekend as they play a trio of games on the road against the Tigers. The Lakers begin their series against Salem on Sunday, March 5th, at 12:00 p.m. with game two to follow while returning to the diamond on Monday with first pitch set for noon in the finale.
1. Looking Back
The Lakers come off a week they would like to put behind them as they finished the Glenville State Tournament 0-4. They found themselves in the middle of some tight contests as three of their losses were by three runs or less. The offense found their rhythm in the final game of the weekend as they managed to plate 12 runs, hoping to carry that into the new month. Eric Chorba was a big reason for the offense being as explosive as it was as he finished the weekend 4-10 with a 1.500 OPS while hitting his first home run and triple of the season, collecting three RBIs.Â
2. Good Odds
Mercyhurst finds themselves going into the weekend series hoping to see history repeat itself as the Lakers are 14-1 all-time against Salem. They have won each of the last five games against their counterpart, outscoring the Tigers 51-17 over that span including a 14-4 win in their last contest. Mercyhurst has never lost when playing on the road in the series, scoring 8.6 runs per game, showing there's no such thing as home field advantage when going against the Tigers
3. Marching On
Coach Spano's crew found plenty of success in March of last season as they finished with a 12-2 record on the month. Offense was the name of the game as they broke double-digits on the scoreboard nine times including a 22-3 win over Lake Erie. The Lakers outscored opponents 138-42 for an average margin of victory of nearly seven runs a game. The pitching staff did their fair share of the work as well as they did not allow more than five runs in any of those contests including eight games where the opposition scored three or less. The Lakers hope to have similar success this time around.Â
4. Scouting Salem
The Tigers come into the series 4-6 on the season with them dropping a pair of games in a three-game set to Alderson Broaddus this past weekend. So far this season, Salem has yet to play on the road as all 10 of their contests have been within their friendly confines. Kaiden Zacharias has been the team's top bat to this point in the year with a .382/.463/.618 triple slash line while hitting a trio of triples. Sam Schmitt leads the team on the mound with 23 strikeouts in 15 innings of work for 13.8 Ks per nine innings while boasting a 3.00 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.
5. Next Game
After seeing the road for two straight weekends, the Lakers make it a third as their next trip is scheduled for Findlay. Mercyhurst travels to see the Oilers beginning on Friday, March 9th, through the 12th with start times of 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
