Lakers Open Glenville State Tournament with Loss

Box Score

Glenville, WV - Mercyhurst Baseball wasn't able to get their weekend started the way they had hoped as they fell to Millersville in game one of the Glenville State Tournament. The Marauders used a three-run fifth inning to help take a four-run lead and never looked back from there in the 8-1 win.

Highlights

The game started off as a defensive battle as neither team scored in the opening two innings. The Marauders threatened to score in the first frame as they found themselves with the bases loaded but were turned away thanks to a strikeout and double play to get out of the inning.

The Lakers had to wait a while to get the offense going as they were held hitless in the first two innings. They managed to tally two hits in the third with Vincent Stutz and Eric Chorba both getting singles but were unable to get scratch across the first run.

Millersville managed to scratch across a run in the third inning to take the lead. They then broke the game wide open in the top of the fifth with them scoring a trio of runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Marauders continued to keep the Laker's offense at bay as Mercyhurst could muster only one run thanks to a home run in the ninth.

Millersville added on in both the eighth and ninth innings as they scored two runs in each frame, ending the game with an 8-1 lead. Luke Jackson got his first hit of the season to help the Lakers get on the board late with a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth, but it proved to be too little, too late in the seven-run defeat.

Highlights

Vincent Stutz picked up where he left off in this one after going 1-3 in his first game of the season with a home run. He finished 1-2 in against Millersville with a single to go along with a walk. Luke Jackson picked up his first home run of the season in this one as he helped get the Lakers on the board in the ninth. Jacob Bazala pitched well out of the pen in his first appearance as he finished with six strikeouts in 3.2 inning while John Bufford Jr. had a pair of Ks in his one inning pitched.

Next Game

Mercyhurst moves to 1-1 on the young season and hope to find themselves above .500 after tomorrow when they face West Chester. The Lakers and Rams face off at 5:00 p.m. before coach Spano and company see D'Youville on Sunday for a pair of games to round out their weekend.
