Four First Period Goals Lead Lakers Past Lindenwood

St. Charles, Mo. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team and the Lindenwood Lions played in game two of their CHA series. The Lakers used four first period goals to come away with a 4-1 win, and a series sweep. The Lakers improved to 8-11-1 overall and 5-3 in the CHA.

How it Happened

The Lakers got on the board first in game two when Sara Boucher scored her team leading tenth goal of the season, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Just under a minute later, the Lakers went on the power play, getting numerous scoring opportunities but couldn't convert. Just after the power play ended, Kylee Mahoney gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead on her fifth goal of the season. At the 10:44 mark of the period, the Lakers went on another power play and this time the Lakers converted. Sofia Nuutinen continued her hot series with another goal, giving the Lakers a 3-0 lead in the first. The Lions tested Ena Nystrøm in the period, and Nystrøm was up for the challenge. As the first period was winding down, the Lakers added another. Sara Boucher scored her second of the game to give the Lakers a 4-0.

Both sides went shot for shot in the second period, each getting quality looks, but the defense and goaltending was superb on both sides. There was only one penalty in the second period, and it was on the Lakers for cross-checking. The Lakers penalty kill did its job and kept the Lions off the board. At the end of two periods of play, the Lakers still held a 4-0 lead.

Looking to get on the board in the third, the Lions put the pressure on the Lakers. Ena Nystrøm made some key saves early to keep the Lions off the board. The Lions were able to get on the board and make it 4-1, but the Lakers were able to close out the game without allowing another goal. The Lakers claimed their first series sweep since September, when they swept Post.
