Box Score Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team returned to the ice after winter break for a non-conference matchup with the #13 team in the country, the Yale Bulldogs. A fast-paced game from each side saw the Bulldogs get a second period goal that would be the difference in a 2-0 win.
How it Happened
The Lakers killed off an early penalty in the first period and got back to full strength. Both sides had opportunities to open the scoring, but each team's defense was blocking every shot. Late in the period, it was the Lakers turn to go on the power play. Only one minute of the power play came off the clock, so the Lakers will have the advantage to start the second period. Sydney Pedersen and Sara Boucher led the team in shots in the first period with three each. The Lakers month off didn't faze Ena Nystrøm as she stopped all eight shots, she saw in the first period.
After killing off the rest of the first period penalty, the Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie midway through the second period. The Lakers went on the attack to try and tie the game before the end of the period but couldn't get anything to go. At the end of two periods of play, the Bulldogs led 1-0. Ena Nystrøm stopped 12 shots in the second period to bring her total to 20.
A quiet third period for both sides saw the game still sitting at 1-0 Bulldogs. With just under 40 seconds left in the period, the Bulldogs added an empty net goal to extend their lead to 2-0.
