Lakers Drop Midweek Matchup to IUP

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst opened up the month of October not quite the way they wanted to, falling to IUP 5-1. The Lakers were able to keep pace with their counterpart in the early going, but the Crimson Hawks proved to be too much down the stretch as the Lakers move to 2-8 on the year.

How it Happened

IUP fired the opening salvo of  the game just a few minutes in with Sydney Schmouder finding the back of the cage. The Crimson Hawks did not wait around all too long to grow out their their lead as they managed to score their second goal of the game with just under nine minutes gone from the opening period.

Mercyhurst did manage to put together a score late in the opening frame with Lexi Odrobina collecting goal number four of the season. The senior streaked up the field while freshman Amy Van Rooyen served a perfect pass, leading to a one-on-one situation and the score.

Odrobina's goal seemed to give Mercyhurst a spark as they kept the score at 2-1 for the remainder of the first half as they looked to pick up the revenge win after falling to IUP earlier in the campaign.

The Crimson Hawks came out of the halftime break as the aggressors as they managed to score a pair of goals in the third period. The first came just one minute into the frame to make it a 3-1 game. They then added on six minutes later to claim a three-goal lead and begin to put this one away. IUP scored their final goal of the game with just over four minutes expired from the fourth, quelling the Laker's hopes after the first-period goal.

Highlights

Lexi Odrobina picked up goal number four of the season while Van Rooyen is awarded her first assist of 2023. Odrobina's goal gives her sole possession of third place on the team in scores, breaking a tie with Rachel Kosowski with three. Kayla Desormeau collected her fourth-straight game with double-digit saves as she had 10 in the game, giving her 88 for the season.

Next Game

Mercyhurst rounds out the first full week of October on the road as they go to Millersville on Saturday, October 7th, for a 12:00 p.m. start.
