The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team enters their final week of regular season play this week with three matches in seven days. The nationally ranked Lakers hope to finish strong ahead of the post season and hopefully solidify homefield advantage.
Mercyhurst travels to the University of Pitt-Johnstown this Saturday, October 28th to take on the 2-9-4 Mountain Cats. Earlier in the year, the Lakers took care of UPJ at home by a score of 4-0. After earning a win against IUP, and tying Edinboro, UPJ most recently lost to Seton Hill 4-1. In their first matchup, the Laker offense attacked from all angles, as four different players scored goals.
Mercyhurst will then host Edinboro University on Tuesday, October 31st. The Fighting Scots are 4-6-4 on the year and lost a close one to the Lakers in their first meeting. Led by Emily Vogel, who has a team leading 7 goals on the year, Edinboro will pose the biggest threat to Mercyhurst entering the last week of play.
To close out the year, the Lakers will finish on the road at California University of Pennsylvania. Cal U currently rounds out the bottom of the PSAC West standings, posting a 2-12-2 record. The Vulcans are currently on a five-game skid entering their last week of play.
Having prior success against all three of the remaining teams plays to the Lakers advantage. The Laker defense has put together quite the season, recording 11 shutouts while outscoring opponents 46-5.
The offensive attack is also the best in the West. Averaging over 13 shots and 3 goals a game, it is a unit that puts constant pressure on opposing defenses.
Heading towards the post season, it is the teams that can maintain their style of play that find success. Rich Wall's bunch hope to do just that as they enter the final stretch.
