Lock Haven, Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced Monday afternoon their week one athletes of the week for soccer with Mercyhurst's Sean Kerrigan taking home the honor. The sophomore earns his first PSAC nod of the new season thanks to a stellar start that helped him climb atop the PSAC leaderboards and move the Lakers to 2-0.
Kerrigan got his great week started on the right foot in the team's season opener against Goldey-Beacom Thursday afternoon. The native of Sligo, Ireland put one into the back of the net in the 38th minute of the match, making it a 2-1 count in favor of Mercyhurst. The sophomore found a through ball from Dylan Sumner and knew what to do with it for goal number one of the new campaign. Kerrigan didn't have to wait around all that long for goal number two of the game as it came in the 60th minute with Sumner once again being on the other end with the assist, making it a 4-1 score in favor of the Lakers. Kerrigan rounded out his day with a free kick assist with his ball finding the head of Axel Aronsson to make it a 5-1 score in the 74th minute.
In his second match of the week, Kerrigan picked up two more goals, helping propel Mercyhurst to another convincing win. Kerrigan had two of the team's three goals during the second half of the Laker's 4-0 win over Georgian Court on Sunday, August 28th. This time around it was the sophomore doing a lot of the work solo as neither of his two goals came off assists. His first score of the afternoon made it a 2-0 score in the 55th minute with his second salvo being the final blow of the bout. In the 77th minute, Kerrigan was handed a golden opportunity with a free kick and did not waste it, putting the ball in the back of the net for his fourth goal of the week.
The Lakers will return to action on Wednesday, August 31st for their home opener of the 2022 season. They hosts Lock Haven in that contest with things set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
