Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team has a busy weekend ahead as they travel to Marist College to take part in their Courtney Fisher Invite Saturday, then will head to Villanova Sunday for an exhibition match with Salem and a rematch with Villanova.
Laker Overview
Mercyhurst hosted the inaugural Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite last weekend, playing to a 1-2 record with a 12-10 win over Mount St. Mary's wrapping up their weekend on Sunday. Sara Marin put together three multi-goal games over the weekend, scoring eight goals en route to being named a PPG Paints Student-Athlete of the Week for Mercyhurst.
Sakura Gavin also had a pair of three-goal games, and Ava Gebhardt had a whopping five goals in the Lakers' loss to Siena on Saturday.
Scouting Marist
Marist is well-traveled through the early part of the season, and come into the weekend 7-7 overall. They opened against stiff competition at the Michigan Tournament, taking losses against four nationally-ranked opponents. Most recently, they went 3-1 at the Santa Clara Invite last weekend, including wins against WWPA West teams Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay.
Scouting Iona
The Gaels come into the weekend at 4-4, but all four of their losses have come to nationally-ranked opponents. They did not compete last weekend, but they competed at the Princeton Invitational two weeks ago, where they lost to No. 24 Bucknell before picking up wins over Saint Francis and Mount St. Mary's. They will play Salem Saturday morning before taking on the Lakers in the afternoon.
Scouting Salem (Exhibition)
WWPA East foe Salem participated in the Robinette Invite, but the Lakers and Tigers did not share a pool. They will get their first chance to compete against each other for the first time in an exhibition setting Sunday at Villanova. The Tigers won all three of their games last weekend against Villanova, Siena and Mount St. Mary's to improve to 3-8 on the season.
Scouting Villanova
The Wildcats also competed at the Robinette Invite, taking a loss to Salem before finishing their weekend with wins over Mercyhurst, McKendree and Gannon. Now 5-6 on the season heading into the weekend, they will play Siena and Salem Saturday at the Courtney Fisher Invite before hosting the Tigers and Mercyhurst Sunday.
