Kansas City, Mo. - The United Soccer Coaches Association announced their Scholar All-American teams yesterday with graduate goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes finding his way onto the list. The native of Broward County, Fl. puts another feather in his cap for the 2022 season as he was named a member of the First Team.

Being named a Scholar All-American encapsulates what it means to be a student-athlete as it looks at the achievements of the individual both on and off the field of play. Gomes had a spectacular season on the field as he proved to be one of the best goalies in all of NCAA DII. He led the nation in goals allowed per game with .219 while also coming in first in save percentage (92.3) and shutouts (15) on his way to a number of major accolades. Gomes proved to be the centerpiece of one of the best defenses in the entire country and his efforts have not gone unnoticed.

"Jonathan has been excellent since he joined us," said Head Coach Ryan Osborne when asked about the achievement. "This is the crowning moment for his career here at Mercyhurst and we are extremely proud of his exploits on and off the field."

As stated, this award looks at what the player has done in the classroom along with their efforts on the field. Gomes finished the semester with a 4.0 GPA as a 5th-year graduate student enrolled in Mercyhurst's Data Science program. His 4.0 GPA was one of only four on the list, making his season that much more impressive.

"We look forward to seeing where his career goes next and we look forward to welcoming him back as an esteemed alum," said Osborne as he talked about the character of his star goalie and where it could him.

Along with being named a USCA Scholar All-American First Team member, Gomes has also been recognized as a member of the PSAC West First Team while earning PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year honors and being named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week on four occasions during the season. He also earned DII CCA All-Atlantic Region First Team, DII CCA All-American First Team, and USCA All-Atlantic Region First Team to make him one of the more decorated players in Mercyhurst's history on the pitch.
