Men’s Rowing Prepares for Head of the Charles

Boston, Ma. - Mercyhurst Men's Rowing sees their first taste of action for the 2022-23 season with a major event as the team is set to compete in the Head of the Charles. The event begins Saturday, October 22nd, and lasts through Sunday with the Lakers set with two entries on the men's side.

1. Leaning on Experience

Mercyhurst boasts a solid group of veterans with eight rowers being upperclassmen between the lightweight and heavyweight teams. The most seasoned of the returners are graduate student Christopher Daniell and seniors Mitchell Dailey, Zachary Porter, Nicholas Carso, Ethan Debasitis, and Brentyn Muir. After concluding last season in the IRA Championship, the older rowers look to have another solid season.

2. Looking for a Repeat

The Lakers hope to have similar success at the Head of the Charles as they did last season with the men's fours able to take home silver. Seanna Zona, Matthew Wnek, Nate Harris, and Ethan Debasitis were a part of the team that helped Mercyhurst claim the medal and they hope to do so again, making it back-to-back trip to Boston with a major victory.

3. New Faces

Mercyhurst Men's Rowing adds a host of new members to the team with 13 incoming freshman joining the team this season. Heavyweight rowing has the smaller of the two groups with four in the form of Michael Cannavo, Anthony DePinto, Noah Littlefield, and Jack Shillington. Lightweight Rowing adds nine new rowers to the Mercyhurst family with it being their largest class since the 2016-17 season when Mercyhurst had 10.

4. Back at the Helm

Director of Rowing, Adrian Spracklen, returns for his 24th season as the head coach of the men's team, making him one of the most tenured coaches at Mercyhurst. Under Spracklen's guidance, Mercyhurst Men's Rowing has been one of the top programs in the country. The team has made a habit of winning Dad Vail Championships and look to do do so once again this year as Spracklen continues to add to his sparkling resumé.

5. What's Next

After wrapping up competition at the Head of the Charles, the Lakers turn their attention to the Turn of the Bear on October 29th. Mercyhurst is set to compete in the Cornell-led event in Ithaca, N.Y. to complete their fall leg of the 2022-23 schedule.
